Acer Aspire AO521-3530 10.1-Inch Netbook (Onyx Black) (Personal Computers) This is the best performing Netbook I have ever touched. I had the Intel Atom based Acer AO532h and it was very good on battery life but poor on graphics performance and general computing. This Acer AO521 blows it away in almost every category except battery life. I can get about 4-5 hours off of battery. The coolest thing is that if you have an HDMI cable, connect this sucker to your HD TV and watch it play web video in full HD resolution (Hulu,Youtube) with no stuttering or lag. The design is not amazing but unless you are trying to make a fashion statement the "Onyx Black" shell gets the job done. I give it the highest rating because it fulfills every need I had. It can also play lightweight games pretty well too. It may cost a little bit more that your average entry level netbook but it outperforms almost all other netbooks on the market. Don't be scared because it says AMD processor, just buy it! . » original news

ASUS Eee PC 1015PN-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) (Personal Computers) Just got this netbook a few days ago and I must say, out of the box, it's pretty disappointing. First off, Windows 7 Starter. This computer was not meant to be used with this extremely limited os. You're definitely going to want at least Home Premium in order to get Optimus (automatic graphics switching) working. Second, only 1gb of ram. I don't think I really need to explain why this is a shortcoming. Good thing I already had my Windows 7 upgrade from my old laptop. First thing I did was a clean install of Windows 7 Premium in order to get rid of all the asus bloatware and get Optimus working. First of all, this computer plays excellent video out of the box. You'll read lots of hardcore PC people grumbling about the exclusion of a true HD screen, but I honestly saw no problem with the current screen, considering how small it is. Installed Firefox (my web browser of choice) and kept getting hang ups on this computer. Firefox has become quite a resource hog over the years (this is the price you pay for top-notch extensions). Decided that I really needed to upgrade the ram on this to its max (2gigs). Installed the new ram and now this computer is absolutely great. Did a non-scientific test run with the battery with normal web browsing and quite a bit of video watching. The battery lasted about 6-7 hours before hitting 5% capacity. Installing the extra ram was a real problem, in my opinion. There's a little plug on the bottom and under it is a single screw to get access to the ram. It all looks nice and simple at first, but then you spin the screw and realize that only that one edge with the screw pushes up. You can pull at the little door but it doesn't budge. I had to take my little flathead screwdriver, along with a huge leap of faith with my brand new computer, and slowly work my way around the door, hoping it would completely unhinge at some point and pop off. The door felt like it came crazy close to snapping in half at a couple points but then I managed to work it off. Taking a look at the bottom half of the door explains the situation much more clearly. Asus, for some inexplicable reason, has decided to put unnecessarily tight teeth on every side of it to hold it in place on the computer. They could have done great with hooks on one side and screws on the other, like most laptops. So modders beware! Prepare for extreme fear, and possible hardware breakage, if you decide to upgrade that ram. I'm actually kind of glad the ram is maxed out at 2gb, because that means I'll never have to take that door off ever again. Overall, this computer is awesome out of the box for a light user, but is also an excellent base if you're looking for a fairly powerful netbook and are willing to invest a little extra into it. UPDATE: This computer HATES firefox. It's been running better since I upgraded the ram, but I still get quite a few hangups. I'd recommend Chrome or Opera, these browsers show no such problems. Also, buyers should probably know that this netbook, with its increased horsepower and small footprint, overheats like crazy. Picked up a Thermapak heatshift pad and this thing works wonders, but don't expect to be running HD videos non-stop for hours unless you're in an ice cold room. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) (Personal Computers) I was absolutely surprised by how well fabricated this little netbook is. The Quality is excellent, the keyboard, takes almost zero getting used to from a full size keyboard. I am typing this review from the unit itself, and I can type to 95% full speed. Most surprising in order: 1. Speed! I wouldnt have imagined with a gig of ram and an N450 ATOM that windows 7 would run this fast. My wireless downloads come in as fast as my athlon multicore desktop. IE launches quickly, as well as other applications. Windows 7 Starter runs superbly. I don't imagine that a CAD CAM or any heavy duty graphical app will run fast on this at all but this is a netbook, and it is surprisingly snappy. 2. Component Quality: I was so happy to find that the touchpad is a synaptics brand touchpad, everyone knows that the synaptics touchpad is the best and the driver software allows you all the advanced touchpad features. 3. USB Ports: I can hookup a Smart Card Reader, a USB Logic Analyzer, and a 4gb Sandisk cruzer all at the same time. I imagine that if you owned a bluetooth mouse or a bluetooth smart phone you can also get that up and running simultaneously. Overall, an amazingly capable netbook. One more thing, the aesthetics were just what I was expecting, it is a sharp looking netbook. Good Job asus, 5/5! . » original news

ASUS Eee PC 1008P-KR-PU17-BR 10.1-Inch Netbook (Coffee Brown) (Personal Computers) So far, I really like this. I waited for this model because it has Windows 7 Home Premium instead of 7 Starter. I've taking it on a trip and it was perfect. I've only encountered one problem which really concerns me: I haven't figured out a way to install the Canon program I need in order to view Canon RAW photos. The problem is that there is insufficient screen resolution for the Canon program to even properly load. If anyone has a solution to this problem, PLEASE reply. ASUS Eee PC 1008P-KR-PU17-BR 10.1-Inch Netbook (Coffee Brown) (Personal Computers) This Net-book works well as advertised. Exterior is such that it does not show smudges etc. The documentation does not tell you that there is a mini VGA to regular VGA connector embedded in the base.. » original news

Sony VAIO VGN-P530H/Q Lifestyle PC - Black (Personal Computers) I've always been a fan of ultraportable computers, and I've owned a few, which include a Motion LS800 tablet, Raon Everun, Vaio TX, Vaio TZ, and an Asus 1000H. So, my review is based upon my experience with those machines. The Vaio P, in my opinion, is the ideal combination of portability and functionality, if typing is an integral part of your computing needs. I bought 2 of them (one for me, one for the wife) as soon as they were announced on the Sony website, and have been using it for about 2 weeks. PRO'S: (1) SCREEN RESOLUTION: One issue that I have always had with any ultraportable (outside of the Vaio TX and TZ) has been low screen resolution (e.g. 1028 x 680), which has always lead to lots of scrolling and/or zooming-out. The resolution on the Vaio P is, in one word, incredible. EVERY webpage is viewable in its entirety on the screen, as is EVERY document I need to read or edit. The downside is that text ends up being VERY small on the screen, but still legible to me (I type documents in 10-pt Times New Roman font). However, there is a personalization option available that allows you to make text/icons 125% larger than normal, which makes things much easier to see. My wife wears glasses and has trouble reading the text at normal settings, so she uses that mode and it works well for her. (2) PORTABILITY: Okay, let's not kid ourselves here. This thing will NOT fit in your shirt/pants pocket (unless you're wearing very baggy cargo pants), but it will fit in a purse or any small satchel. Weight is negligible, even with the extended-life battery attached. Portability is a big thing for me in my profession (medical student, MD in a few months), and this machine can easily fit in the pocket of my white coat when I'm on the move. (3) THE KEYBOARD: I type extensively as part of my profession, and having a usable keyboard is a component that has always been missing from any computer that I could carry on my person. My Motion tablet and Everun were useful for reading on-the-go, but essentially useless for typing anything beyond a short phrase. My Vaio TX/TZ have great keyboards (I've typed thousands of pages on them), but the machines themselves are too large to carry on me at all times. Let me also take this opportunity to point out that, in comparison to the Asus 1000H, the Vaio P is not just another crappy netbook. The keyboard on the 1000H, for many reasons, is a low-quality component that definitely shows with heavy use. Any typing mistakes made with the Vaio P are genuinely my own keystroke mistakes, which was not the case with the Asus (90% of the time, it was just the junky keyboard causing mistakes). The right-shift key on the Vaio P is truncated, but its placement to the left of the arrow keys makes it a much more natural motion to hit, and something that you can become accustomed to without causing you to alter your typing accuracy on a normal-sized keyboard, which was really just impossible with the 1000H (that had the right shift key placed to the right of the arrow keys). (4) FUNCTIONALITY: It is a fully-functional PC, capable of running any program you might need to run, given that you're not trying to use this as a gaming PC. I have installed Windows 7 on my Vaio P, which has made it much more efficient at running multiple programs simultaneously, as well as improving stability. I would highly recommend this upgrade for anyone purchasing this machine. CONS: (1) VISTA: This machine should have come standard with XP. Vista boot time is horrendously slow, even from hibernation, and installing Windows 7 does not fix this problem. My other ultraportables running XP were able to return from hibernation in about 20-60 seconds. The Vaio P takes probably 2-3 minutes. Maybe I'm a little impatient, but I want my computer to be ON when I turn it on. The integrated instant-on technology is not terribly useful to me because I generally need to use programs other than Media player or Firefox when I fire my machine up. (2) NOT USER-UPGRADEABLE: As I understand it, the RAM is soldered to the motherboard and thus not upgradeable. 3 GB of RAM would have made the VAIO P much faster, and would have alleviated problem (1) I described above, and with 3 GB of RAM, Windows 7 would not even be a necessity because it would then be able to run Vista acceptably. (3) STANDARD BATTERY LIFE: Sony touts 4 hours of life with the standard battery, which is of course a lie. It's more like 2.5 to 3 hours with screen brightness turned down to 1 or 2 (at which it is still very much readable/viewable), with WiFi on. I also have the large capacity battery, which takes it to 6.5 to 7 hours at the same settings. The large capacity battery adds maybe 1 to 1.5 cm of height to the machine, which is something of an eyesore, but I will make the sacrifice because the added battery life is worth more to me than the 0.2 lbs (not noticeable) and increased size. » original news

Asus Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Crystal Black) (Personal Computers) First, I acknowledge that I actually own the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA-PU17-BK with Windows 7 Starter; This is not the model that includes Win XP, which has different hardware specs. After over a week of owning and actively using the 1005-PU17-BK, I wish to share the following points: - Reading the reviews of the 1005HA Win XP model, I was hesitant to purchase any Eee netbook model, fearing issues with the power adapter. Upon vigorous daily use, I have had no issues with the power adapter at all. - The keyboard layout is comfortable and the keys are a manageable size, with the exception of the UP/Down arrow keys. I like to scroll through web pages using the arrow keys; both keys are small for my average sized fingers. - The netbook's performance is more than adequate for my needs, which includes word processing, web surfing, email, and watching video files. Note that if you are considering this model to watch high def video (1080p), this is not for you. Refer to an ION based netbook, like the HP Mini 311 or the Eee PC 1201N. - Compared to the advertised battery life of 10.5 hours, my battery usage ranged at approximately 8 hours, using a "balanced" power scheme. I am satisfied with the purchase of the 1005HA-PU17. Before making my decision on this model, I was considering the HP Mini 311. Although the Mini 311 featured the ION based video hardware, the Eee PC model included a 802.11n wireless NIC. Since my needs weighed more towards productivity than entertainment, I went for the extra wireless throughput. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) (Personal Computers) I've had the Eee PC 1005PE-MU17 for a few days and so far so good. I chose this netbook primarily because of the battery life and the keyboard. So far I have not been disappointed, the keyboard is small but it is comfortable and the separation of the keys makes typing a lot easier than the Aspire One. The keys seem to be smaller on this unit but the layout much more "typist friendly". I'm not crazy about the touch pad, I much prefer the touch pad on some of the HP units. Where the buttons are on the side as opposed to the bottom. That would have given you more surface area to work with. The touchpad does have gesture support but it's not that great. The pinch and zoom is a real annoyance and I have turned it off. Also I think I would have liked a unit with separate buttons for left and right click. The single rocker is ok but it does not seem to be as responsive as some of the other netbooks on the market. With the screen brightness set to a moderate level I was able to get about 8 hours of life out of the battery. That's plenty for my usage, I usually plug it in at night so I'm not sure how long it takes to reach a full charge. I suppose the "Eee Super Hybraid Engine" helps with that. I don't know but that's the claim. I have noticed that Hulu videos plan smoother when I turn the engine up to full power. H.264 videos plays excellent in Windows Media player and VLC. If you are sensitive to glare you are going to hate this screen, it's very reflective. Personally it doesn't bother me because I prefer the glossy ones over the matte screens. I know it sound like I'm pointing out a lot of negatives about this unit but I think it's things that you may want know before buying. I researched several netbooks over the past few weeks and I'm VERY happy with this one. I would definitely buy this one again. . » original news

Samsung N120-12GBK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 6 Cell Battery (Personal Computers) I bought this last week after reading a LOT of reviews on various netbooks. I wanted something lightweight, durable and reliable for traveling especially via plane. I have a fairly portable laptop already but every extra ounce seems to really seem heavy walking through airports, NYC, etc. I also like the idea of being able to carry a lightweight machine to public places where i can get a little work done without needing to carry a laptop, power cord, etc. I was a little worried that a netbook would not be 'enough' but so far it has been outstanding! This particular netbook is far nicer looking and seemingly more durable than ANYTHING i've seen at local stores. Although the screen is advertised as 'glossy' it is not overly so and looks nothing like the HP and Asus 'glossy' screens. The keyboard is fantastic and the built in track pad works really well. Battery life has been very good - I got close to 8 hours the first time I charged it. This netbook is comfortable to type on and has rounded edges. The speakers are decent and certainly better sounding than many other netbooks on the market. I recently loaded Office 2007 - it runs just fine. I also UN-Loaded the pre-installed McAfee software, replaced with AVG and that was a good decision - things are much faster without McAfee. I plan to upgrade to 2 gb of RAM but right now everything runs just fine with the installed 1 gb. Although a netbook will probably not ever replace my laptop, it is perfect for the times i want/need to have computer access for internet, email and word processing/office type work. The convenience of being able to take this very portable, lightweight machine with me is a real bonus! Although this netbook is a bit more expensive than some others on the market, I think it's worth the extra money. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1001P-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) (Personal Computers) We read lots of reviews online and looked at the specs for what was available, and we ultimately chose this brand and model for price and specs value. We are casual users, mostly for office, photo, and some video. I've not installed any heavy software yet. I'm not a gamer. We followed the instructions and had no problem getting it charged and up and running. I've only had to remove a little bloatware and found most of the features I need. So far, it looks like we made a good choice. 1. Like other reviewers, we think the keyboard is fine. And I have larger hands. 2. The web cam works and the quality is not fabulous, but satisfactory. 3. The splash top feature to circumvent the windows OS set up easily, though it didn't seem much of an advantage except signing on easily to the internet. I'll have to experiment more to see if it's faster or not. 4. The SD slot is a great feature, and I was able to play my mp4 videos with no change of settings. This is also in part due to having windows 7. I've had problems with video in Vista. 5. The fit and finish is great. I like the textured lid, subtle and hip. The keys, hinges, buttons, etc. are good. 6. The computer fit easily in the smaller of the 10.2 netbook cases we tried. We went with a simple Targus neoprene cover. 7. The mouse pad works nicely, smoothly. 8. I understand what people are saying about it feeling top heavy, like it wants to tilt back, but it is no issue on a flat surface. 9. We're very glad we got the new processor and larger harddrive. Overall, it looks like a good purchase for us. The size, shape, weight, and features meet our needs. Good luck finding the right one for you. . » original news

Did lots of research on features and performance, and was overwhelmed at how man of these netbooks have the exact same internals as all the others. I finally went with the HP Mini 210-1055NR because it has the full glass over the entire screen and bezel that makes it look so much better than the 110 or similar dells. This just creates such a more aesthetically pleasing look to the entire netbook. It also had a little better specs than all the other clones that were budget priced all over the web (Acers, Dells, HP 110s) and with the extra RAM I bought for it, and the easy access panel that allows you to remove the entire bottom cover of the netbook, the upgrade was simple and performance is great! I recommend this to anyone looking at getting a netbook for either easy writing or surfing. I haven't played with HPs linux instant on software that comes preinstalled, but Windows 7 starter works just fine, despite previously hearing bad things about its limitations, I with it and am happy I chose it over the severely outdated XP. One thing that is crucial to do is remove as much of the bloatware that HP installs by default on their new systems. You will see a significant performance boost and less harddrive space taken up by clearing off all the trial games and software that come with your new HP. . » original news

Dell Inspiron Mini 10 10.1-Inch Obsidian Black Netbook with Integrated TV Tuner - Up to 6 Hours 20 Minutes of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) (Personal Computers) I got this in the cyber monday lightning deal that went sold out in a few seconds and let me say that I wouldn't have been too disappointed if I had missed the deal now that I got this thing on my hand for a few days. First of all the screen is a bit too small for my taste and I didn't realize until after the purchase that amazon was selling the 1024x600 version not the 720p version that has been in most review. Second, the Windows 7 is slow, which is nothing new, but apparently I had expected a responsiveness closer to a smart phone, and Windows smart phone is not at all that fast by the way. I have a great suspicion that 2GB memory instead of the non-upgradeable 1GB could have made a great deal of difference in this manner. However, a mixed curse with Windows 7 Starter will limit the number of applications open at a time to total of 3 so 1GB is probably never going to be a problem just because of this self-imposed crippling of the OS. In this respect to the non-upgradeable memory, running full-blown WindowsXP is probably going to shoot you in the foot more than the Windows7 Starter. But on the good part the TV reception is great and the software works, albeit slow to respond in changing channels. Youtube video runs smoothly but since the screen is so short I found myself having to go full screen most of the time instead of watching within the window. The shortness of the screen also makes most of the real estate consumed by the toolbars in the browser to be very annoying, except for Chrome which barely has anything on the top. I guess if I had laid my hand on this item before I purchased it I wouldn't have been too eager to click on the lightning deal, but for the price I don't think I could claim it as a terribly poor machine although I would gladly spring another $100 for the larger resolution and 2GB memory and then it would be just perfect. For now, this is great as a quick companion for emergency use on the road when the regular laptop is just a bit too much hassle to lug around. . » original news

Sony VAIO VPC-W211AX/L 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers) The first impression is its nice appearance. I've never had any netbooks before but this product from sony is quite satisfactory. The speed is acceptable. Still some people argued with the windows 7 starter edition but I would say it's designed for light computing and web surfing and it actually does a good job on these things. If you are looking for a second pc (or laptop) and this one might fit your need. However if you expect it for primary use then it might disappoint you. To share my personal use, I have a mac desktop at home and that serves as my primary computer. And when I go outside I only bring this little tiny creature with me. As long as the internet access is available I can always connect back to my home desktop and use some remote desktop to do whatever heavy tasks on the main computer. And if you really dislike windows, I'd recommend you to try ubuntu, a free linux os. I'm currently having dual systems on this vaio and honestly I'm on ubuntu most of the time. The system interface is neat and very efficient in doing those less heavy things. Also if you're worried about whether one GB RAM is enough to run win 7, using ubuntu can definitely be a nice alternative. . » original news

Sony VAIO Lifestyle VGN-P688E/Q 8-Inch Laptop - Black (Personal Computers) I purchased this notebook to use as a travel laptop for this purpose, it is great. The display is bright and very legible (after changing the font DPI to 120 dpi). The keyboard is usable (given the size) and the built-in SD card slot comes in handy. The main problem with this laptop is that it comes with Vista SP1. After updating the SP2, the performance is much better. I also got the Intel developer drivers from their website and used the "Have Disk" procedure to update. Now the graphics have reasonable responsiveness too. I think I am going to get the extended battery which essentially doubles the battery life. Overall, having purchased this refurbished for 600, I am happy with it. I will most likely update to Windows 7 to get even better performance. By the way, the Z series ATOM supports hyper-threading which is almost 2x the perfomance similar to a dual core. I wish SONY/INTEL would release a graphics driver that took full advantage of the dual stream capability of the GMA500 PowerVR graphics chipset. For Linux, try the Linux JoliCloud Netbook distro [...]. . » original news

Toshiba Mini NB205-N313/P 10.1-Inch Posh Pink Netbook - 9 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers) UPDATE: Just in case you decide to order a case for this netbook, keep in mind that the dimensions in the Amazon description or Toshiba's website (10.4 x 7.6 x 1.27 inches) are the dimensions of this netbook WITHOUT the 6-cell battery. If you look at the side-view photo in the Amazon description area (the one with the 7.6" measurement right below it), you'll see it's pictured without the battery. I just measured mine and with the 6-cell battery protruding from the back, it's actually 10.4 x 8.4 x 1.27 so many of the cases you find on Amazon made for 10" netbooks may not fit the NB205 with the 6-cell battery. Okay that's it for my update... read on for my original review... ---------- I just received my Toshiba NB205 yesterday and after spending many hours "playing" with it, I can easily say that, hands down, it is the BEST Netbook on the market today! At the end of next week, I'll be traveling overseas and I wanted a small and lightweight laptop that I would be able to use to watch movies on the plane, transfer vacation photos and videos to, and use the internet for researching stuff from my hotel room. I currently own a 15" Macbook Pro but decided I didn't want to take it with me since it's a bit bigger & heavier and I can't afford to lose it. That's when I began researching these Atom-based Netbooks. When I started researching, the Toshiba NB205 had not yet been released but there were still many netbook models out there by other manufacturers. I had originally considered the Samsung NC10, Acer Aspire One AOD250, Asus 1000HE, and Lenovo S10 as they all were pretty much equipped with similar configurations (Atom N270/N280 1.6 or 1.66Ghz cpu, 10" screen, 1GB ram, 160GB HD, 6-cell Li-Ion battery, Windows XP Home) and priced in the $350-400 price range. I won't go into too much detail about what I liked or didn't like about the other products but I had pretty much narrowed it down to either the Samsung NC10 or the Acer AOD250. Then I came across a pre-release review from Laptop Magazine on the Toshiba and decided to wait on my netbook. It was definitely worth the wait considering this is the first netbook I've come across that actually had noticeable differentiating features. When you compare all the others, it's kind of hard to choose from one over the other because they're all so similar! The 4 biggest selling points on this Toshiba NB205 that had me wait for it was the 9-hour battery life, the look & feel of the keyboard, the size of the trackpad & buttons, and the overall aesthetics of it. The whole point of buying a laptop this small and compact is for its portability factor. When you have to lug a brick-based AC adapter with you in fear the battery in your laptop won't last as long as you need it, it sure interferes with how portable carrying a laptop really is. A 9-hour lithium-ion battery will definitely solve that problem. Most of you are probably wondering how realistic that 9-hour rating really is... Let me just reassure you all, the battery life is GOOD! I brought it to a full charge, then unplugged it from the adapter and watched two movies on it (more on the movie playback capabilities later) and did 4 hours worth of web surfing afterwards -- all off the power from the battery on a single charge! You students out there can now bring it to all your classes and not have to look for a wall outlet! Oh, btw, I had the screen brightness set to 1/2 (level 4 brightness setting) and turned off the Bluetooth. Netbooks are known for smaller keyboards and even worse, SMALL trackpads and trackpad button(s). In addition to the smaller size, many of the netbooks I saw in person at my local Fry's Electronics had very "cheapy"-feeling keyboards -- they just felt real fragile compared to the keyboard on my Macbook Pro. Enter the Toshiba NB205. Finally, a netbook that has a keyboard with keys that had the look and feel of a Mac keyboard and a robustly solid build to it. In addition to the look and feel, the keys were also pretty darn close in width to my Mac keyboard (both my Macbook Pro's keyboard, and my desktop Mac's keyboard). I'll try to post some comparison photos on Amazon this weekend for all those interested. The trackpad and buttons on the NB205 is also the biggest I've seen in the netbook category. Toshiba did a tremendous job in getting this right. Most of the other netbooks had really small trackpads and little miniature trackpad button(s) that felt real flimsy. Another feature that I like with the trackpad that's not stated anywhere is that the very right edge of the trackpad can be used for scrolling web pages or other documents (similar to the one on the Samsung NC10). This feature is not obvious as there are no arrow indicators like there is on the NC10 but it does support it! I won't go into the aesthetics of this unit since you can pretty much see how amazing this netbook looks from the Amazon photos (I'll also add my own photos this weekend so you can get a better feel for the size, etc. » original news

Sony VAIO VPC-W211AX/W 10-Inch White Netbook (White) (Personal Computers) I had read average reviews on this elsewhere. I bought it because it's one of the few 10.1" netbooks with 1366x768 resolution (instead of 1024x600 which is normal for this size). That intrigued me because the more resolution means the more screen you get on a page. Usually that is better for browsing, word processing, etc. Problem is I'm barely able to make sense of a 10.1" screen with 1366x768. I bet 1024 would be better. And then you get to the reviews -- which is that this thing slows down because it has more dots to put on the screen. So, I'm getting the bad side on both ends. Also, the keys are a little crammed, another negative I've read and now agree with. It isn't that they're small because it's a 10.1" screen - unlike most netbooks, the keys go to the very edges left to right of the keyboard. So Sony could have made the keys bigger, but consciously decided not to, because they stop about a half an inch to the left and right. This Vaio has no HD video accelerator, like Crystal HD. So any kind of HD videos are out. The battery is good. It gets the 8 hours that it says. The only downside is that the battery isn't thin and flat -- it's used as the stand. Which is good on a table, it gives you the slant. It's less than comfortable tho when on your lap. But good news is that it doesn't get superhot when on your lap, either. Otherwise, it's your standard netbook. N450, 1GB ram, etc. When you take into account that the screen isn't all that great with the extra resolution, and you look at the price compared to other netbooks -- there's probably better alternatives available. I figure you are paying $50 for the screen, and they should be giving you $50! Hint: If you buy this or any Windows 7 netbook, turn some of the Aero screen special effects off --- they slow down the system immensely. It seemed sluggish even after this, but it's just the nature of a netbook. You'll really notice the difference if you have a regular or high-end laptop that you have (for work, etc.). You get what you pay for. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1215T-MU17-BK 12.1-Inch Netbook (Black) (Personal Computers) This product has some faults, but I gave it five stars due to the fact that I extensively researched it prior to purchase and knew exactly what I was getting. I believe this is the best you can get in its class for the money. I bought it to replace a 10 inch version which I used extensively and was rather fond of. When I found I could get a 12 inch screen with much better components I had to go for it. I have been building my own computers since back in the 486 days. The laptop is the only factory machine I will buy. When I buy a laptop I usually remove the hard drive, toss it in the closet and replace it with a better one. The netbooks are too difficult to take apart without damage and the factory drive works well enough for its intended purpose. The good: 1. Beautiful, crisp twelve inch screen makes the step up from a 10" well worth it. 2. Excellent battery, lasted more than three hours first time out. 3. Everything works as advertised. 4. Very little heat generated and light enough to carry everywhere. The bad: 1. As received, the system is totally choked with what I believe is called "bloatware" (I have names for it that can not be used here). I build my own systems and I do not like having things on my hard drive that I did not request. As experienced as I am, it still took me many hours to remove the unwanted programs and fine tune everything. . » original news

Acer AO532h-2588 10.1-Inch Onyx Blue Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers) ...until I had it for a while. I will go ahead and reiterate what many reviewers before me have clearly stated - you will struggle with this netbook if you depend on it for cpu-heavy tasks like playing graphics-intensive games or hardcore photo editing. Along the same lines (things you may have read in other reviews) this thing comes with a ton of bloatware that needs to be removed pronto or else it will run slow as molasses. I purchased this particular comp at tarjay for 2 bills, yes $200 and was expecting to get what I paid for, meaning a cheap piece of crap that would allow me to compute on the go. What I got was much, much more. It is simply a matter of realizing that you must buy into a new way of computing, at least if you are used to desktop pc's with tons of memory and HD space. First thing you need to do is dump the windows 7 starter kit by way of upgrade (by paying $ or otherwise) and get yourself something a bit more suitable, I use 7 ultimate (although I don't really need to be, I just thought it sounded more awesome than "home" or "professional".) I tried on Ubuntu for a week or so and didn't like it all that much. Honestly it is a matter of personal opinion, it is total preference varying on a user to user basis that could be depend on something arbitrary like a visual theme or location of certain needed items or files. The cool thing about Ubuntu is that it is 100% free, and you can boot it from a thumb drive so you don't have to wipe your 7 out to try it. I tried it, thought it was pretty cool, but didn't notice any real difference in speed. That was the whole reason I tried it, I read a bunch of opensource junkies waxing about how much faster it was and guess what, it wasn't. Hardly noticeable. 7 is like what vista should have gone for in the first place: everything you need minus a whole bunch of useless programs you never use that take up tons of hard drive space, although there are a few stupid things you can easily uninstall, most of it from Acer. Once you go though the control panel and uninstall all the bloatware, this thing is lean and mean. But you absolutely have to follow these rules, in my opinion based on 6 months experience with this product, if you want it to perform at maximum speed and efficiency. First off, wean yourself from the tit of any browser besides Google Chrome. I tried every single different one on here and Chrome on this sucker runs laps around the competition in terms of speed in loading pages and graphics. Other browsers (I prefer Firefox) just do not cut it on this thing. Your next step, if you have to do word processing or any other MSoffice task like excel or powerpoint, is to get openoffice. Ditch the proprietary microjunk and get OO, it works much faster and uses less battery. If you need to read PDFs, get Foxit reader. Again, I have tried many different products for these tasks and these ones are the quickest loading, most CPU efficient programs out there and guess what: they are FREE! Nothing is stopping you from unlocking this netbooks true potential. OK - let me clear the air once and for all about the issue of Readyboost, touched on vaguely and uninformatively by a few reviewers and overlooked by the rest. If you don't know what readyboost is, it is a feature on vista and 7 where you can allegedly increase your computers peppyness and responsiveness by using a thumb drive for small ram operations (forgive my lack of jargon, look on wikipedia for a nerdier explanation.) Flash drives are so ubiquitous nowadays: what a great idea it would be to throw one in one of the three usb slots for a quicker computer. What's this? You can even use a SD card in the cardreader so there isn't anything sticking out of the side of your netbook! How awesome! NO. The cardreader is not USB 2.0, why, I have no idea. Someone in another review incorrectly stated that acer has a driver that enables you to use readyboost in the cardreader. Not so, I tried all the different drivers there are and no haps. So I tried it with the USB flash drive and wala, it worked. It increased speed noticeably, I recommend it for anyone who has one of these netbooks. Cheap, and I use a Buffalo thumbkey 4gb that protrudes only 5mm from the side of my netbook. Like it's not even there. Readyboost is only effective if you use it in a 2.5:1 or less ratio to your ram. 4gb readyboost cache on the flash to 2gb ram is my current setup. That brings me to my next point: upgrade the ram. It is really easy. There is a lot of faulty info about ram upgrades in other literature about this netbook, even from the so called Acer "tech support" guys. Yes, you can upgrade the ram. It is not at all a matter of some computers will and some won't, if you have the Acer ao532 2588 you can throw in a 2gb ram stick. I have a couple friends who also have this computer and they have done the same. » original news

Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t 0651-85U 10.1-Inch Netbook Tablet (Black) (Personal Computers) I got my Lenovo Ideapad just a few weeks ago. I have been bery impressed. I had doubts about the Atom processor and frankly, I had doubts about Lenovo. I have been very impressed. The size and weight are what you would expect in a netbook, but the "flip" and touch capability of the screen is great. It is a tablet and netbook in one. The touch interface is not quite as good as the iPad, but the flexibility of also using it as a netbook with multiple USB slots and a full (real) keyboard, make it a great tool. I have tried the iPad and the Lenovo Ideapad beats it. Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t 0651-85U 10.1-Inch Netbook Tablet (Black) (Personal Computers) I bought this computer as a replacement for another netbook. I figured the touch screen would be helpful for taking notes, marking up papers, and the like (I'm a PhD student).. » original news

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1215N-PU17-BK 12.1-Inch Netbook with 6 Hours of Battery Life - Black (Personal Computers) I just got my Asus 1215n in the mail a few hours ago from fedex, and let me say it is awesome. I love it, its a good size screen, its got a good battery life and i can play HD videos on youtube with no lag what so ever. The internet is SUPER fast, i think cause of the dual processer and DDR3 ram. I havent had time to test any games yet but it should be able to play any games out there in medium, low settings. I'll write an other review once i test some games. Oh and as far as the "Flexkey board" goes, its really not that bad, like you dont notice it unless you press the keys like really hard. Oh and the netbook it self is extremely light, i was so suprized when i lifted it up. For a under $500 dollar price range I HIGHLY recommend this netbook, ive researched every laptop and netbook on the market and this is by far the best one you can but in its price range. The next best thing is a $1300 Mac Book Pro. BTW im using the netbook to write this review. =) Update: I installed Starcraft 2 on this netbook and ran the game in medium settings and with 720p res with no lag and the game played great. . » original news

Dell Inspiron Mini iM1012-571OBK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Obsidian Black) (Personal Computers) I bought this for my girlfriend to use for her jobs, which require frequent document creation/viewing and spreadsheet creation/editing, as she often complained about the weight of our standard laptop, an Inspiron 1545. The specs for this, or any, netbook don't warrant paying anyone over $300 for such a device, and after shopping around for prices, I found this to be the most reasonably priced machine from a manufacturer with good repute. It is perfectly capable at running Microsoft Office 2007 applications, with multiple windows and programs opened. The battery life is about 8 1/2 hours in my experience so far. It did NOT come with a an operating system backup disc (Windows 7 Starter edition), unlike the past two PCs I bought from Dell, to my dissapointment, especially considering there is no factory default image. (However, it did come with two other backup discs for drivers and applications, and Microsoft Works 9.) I called Dell tech support to share this concern. They assured me that in the event of any such necessary procedures as dramatic as a factory default reset, Dell would replace the hardware something that has Windows 7 Starter preinstalled in such a way as to make it possible to reset the system. I persisted with my request for the disc, explaining that down the line when my support year expires, I would be out of luck if I did have a major problem. The customer service guy then agreed to send me a backup disc. It came three days later, along with another driver backup disc, and a Webcam software backup disc. Very satisfied with their customer service, as always. This netbook is absolutely perfect in size, weight, and balance for casual surfing on your lap. After reading many netbook reviews, this was a major concern of mine, as my girlfriend can spend hours on Facebook with the laptop in her lap; so, in that respect, this PC is a winner. Its as cozy as opening up a good book to read in your lap. The screen is very bright and crisp, better in fact than my Inspiron 1545's 15" screen. I'm not a huge fan of the small keyboard, but its easy to get used to. One con--the touchpad is flawless, but the left and right mouse-click buttons are in the left and right corner of the touchpad itself, instead of being separate buttons. Good space saving design, but the practical result is that the buttons are difficult to push down hard enough to operate, compared to any other laptop mouse button experience I've ever used. Kind of a pain, but not too bad since I usually just tap the touchpad for left-click features anyway. P.S. In case I gave anyone the wrong idea, this computer does not have a dvd/cd drive, you will have to get an external one to use discs. P.P.S. The price has gone up 25 bucks to $340 since I bought just two weeks ago. Lame, folks. Seriously, 1 GB of memory and an N450 Atom processor, just as Intel is preparing to release its next batch of more powerful netbook processors and more netbooks with 2GB are about to hit the market...that price is just not justified. I'm deducting a full star from my original review for this price hike. Yeah, its competitive, but all netbooks in this price range are overpriced. . » original news

Asus Eee PC T91MT-PU17-BK 8.9-Inch Intel Atom Netbook Computer (Black) (Personal Computers) Pros: sturdy, nice tablet mode, fast sleep and hibernate Cons: non-removable battery, small keyboard I bought this machine as an experiment, to see if I could avoid lugging my laptop around for day trips, meetings, and even around the house, for email, web-surfing, and document editing. I'm pretty pleased with it. I use gmail and a document-sharing website, so most of my environment is always available, and I can move other files with an SD card (the Asus supports two!) Obviously, any netbook could also do the job for me, but they do not provide the T91's "tablet mode" which I find handy. I'm still experimenting with it, but a tablet seems less obtrusive being used in a meeting, more convenient when walking around or standing, and in other cases. I bought the T91MT model, even though the multi-touch seemed of limited value to me, because I wanted the MT model's 32GB solid state disk. After 2 weeks I'm still not using the multi-touch much, and I don't even find the 32GB necessary if I uninstall software that I don't need, but I'm sure I'll expand to use the space over time. 32GB might seem really small to you, but remember, that was a reasonable hard disk size not that long ago, and the SSD is faster. If you are using more than a few gigabytes for your documents and email, you might take a look at whether you can really need all of that... of course, if you have special uses like video that's another story. Asus also provides 500GB of web space with this machine, I haven't tried using that yet. On battery power, when the machine is in "stamina" versus "speed" mode, I do notice that the machine is sluggish, but it runs fine for simple text editing and simple web sites, and you can click on the battery icon to change to higher speed if you need it for videos, etc. File copy seems to be fast, perhaps because of the SSD. The wifi seems fast. The Asus takes about 4 seconds to load a really large MS Word file (while running IE and PDF reader), and about 25 seconds to restart from hibernate. I later upgraded to 2GB of memory; the Word startup was slightly faster, and hibernate restart was the same (surprisingly, since it has to reload more memory now). I have never run down the battery. I plug the Asus in at night, and it makes it through several hours of work during the day, no problem. By default, it sleeps when you flip the power switch, but I've changed that to hibernate to save power (maybe that wasn't necessary). The keyboard is acceptable, but I'm definitely typing slower than on my regular laptop. I sense it would be much better if the keyboard (and Asus) were just 1 cm wider. The space bar was a problem for me, it's just a bit too short... I accidentally hit the right-side ALT key with my thumb instead. I used AutoHotKey to reprogram that key to be a space bar. That worked. I disabled the touchpad "click" to avoid accidentally selecting things, I use the two-sided button under the touchpad to click, and I often use my finger on the screen for selection, scrolling, etc. The biggest negative to me, if you accept the necessary compromises in keyboard and screen size, is that the battery is not user-replaceable. If you search on the web you will see that the battery can be replaced by removing some screws, but that voids the warranty. I confess I almost never replaced the battery on my laptop (only as a spare on a long plane flight). However, it will be a pain in a year when the Asus T91 battery needs to be replaced. By the way, if you do need to carry the A/C power supply, it's really small, but the A/C cord is more bulky than the box itself. If you replace that cord with the following 1-foot cord, the whole thing is smaller, and you still have about 4' of the (much thinner) low-voltage cord on the box: http://www.amazon /gp/product/B000BSLS0W/ref=oss_T15_product . » original news

Samsung GO N310 10.1-Inch Midnight Blue Netbook (Personal Computers) Got mine couple of weeks ago and bought the external DVD drive for additional $50 (very good price and comes in handy). Everything works out of the box with no messy setup needs, Windows 7 starter seems slow, guess it's the processor itself. My main computer is a fast Lenovo laptop with discreet graphics so this unit is DEFINITELY slow in comparison. If you intend to do any processor or graphics intensive work, than DO NOT buy a netbook (any netbook) as you will be sorely disappointed. The ONLY reason, in my opinion, of buying a netbook is to have something light to carry outside of office/home for internet and typical MS Office software (or similar) use. The small size does feel restrictive after a while and the small screen is a strain. The level of brightness does not approach that of regular laptops (maybe it's just this particular brand but I don't think so). The most aggravating thing for me is the lack of responsiveness of the cursor. There is an annoying lag between your cursor movement and the actual response on the screen. It's a killer fault as far as how really useful this netbook is for me. Yes, I can stand the irritation for short uses but it's too much if it is intended to be be your primary computer. The small size and good battery life make this netbook great for use on travels (which is the intent for my purchase) but the obvious shortcomings make it far from ideal for use as a primary computer. So buy it for what it's intended for, and don't be fooled by it's cuteness. . » original news

HP Mini 210-1010NR 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 4.25 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers) The best thing here is really just the price. For well under the $299 benchmark you get a functional laptop with all the basics but no frills. The second best thing is the styling, which is slick even for a netbook, especially with the practical anti-glare screen. Otherwise, there's nothing special here. It's one of the few laptops with an anti-glare screen, and I love that. Even then, the coating is a bit distracting in its own way--you can see the speckling when you look for it. It was worth it for me, but I'm starting to think HP is a little bipolar with its screens: too much reflection or too much anti-glare coating. Battery life really is just four hours max, so that's about two hours of streaming video or music with the screen open. It's more than worth getting the bigger 6-cell battery separately or standard with the Mini 210 1030, which is identical otherwise. Since the "4.75 hours" claim is accurate, I gather the Acers & Asuses claiming 5 to 10 hours are telling the truth too, so if you plan to stream video on the go or expect it to last the whole work day...spring for that 6-cell and be prepared for a heavy netbook. But the presumably wimpy battery does result in a super-slim and light form factor measuring a tidy 10.5x7 inches. The Mini 210 feel like an actual paper notebook or appointment book! It makes the Dell Minis look bloated and clunky. Combined with glossy black finish and the almost shell-shaped lid, this netbook look very slick. Performance? As usual modify your expectations and you won't be disappointed...but one note: 1080p video will be a disaster, and streaming 720 will be choppy, but downloaded 720 videos can be played reasonably well using VLC Media Player 1.1. I'm sure there are better software solutions out there, and the Crystal HD chip is only $100 or so, but once you start optioning up these netbooks with RAM and everything, you end up with a $600 10-incher. See, one of the things that makes a netbook a netbook is price, so there will always be compromises. . » original news

Disney Netpal by ASUS - 8.9-Inch Princess Pink Netbook - 5 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers) We got this for my Daughter for her 4th birthday and it is just her size and working out great. It says for 6-12 years, but she is responsible with computers and used to working on them. I decided on the Disney Netbook instead of a regular netbook because it says it has a spill resistant keyboard and supposed to be sturdier. I can't say if this is true as this is the only netbook we currently own. We like the ASUS brand of computers so that was a plus. I thought I would like the parental program that is on it, but that is totally worthless. It is cute, but makes it impossible to add anything or do anything on the desktop and the internet pretty much. My daughter likes to play Jumpstart and some other online games and it ended up being much easier to use the regular desktop for all her stuff. You can still turn the Disney desktop on to go and play those games so it works out ok. It is a fast machine and so far has had good battery life. We are very pleased with it so far. I only wish Netbooks had room for an internal optical drive as my daughter has several games that require the cd to be in to play. But that is solved easily with an external one. . » original news

Acer AO532h-2588 10.1-Inch Onyx Blue Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life (Personal Computers) A netbook seems ideal for vacation travel. It's compact, lightweight (2.6 lbs), has wireless for internet, a good size screen for viewing photos, a big drive (160 GB) for storage, an 8-hour battery, and a media card slot to download photos from the camera. My first decision was Acer at $ 300 Vs. HP at $350. They are virtually identical. I've been unimpressed with HP's tech support on my $ 1500 laptop. HP has no advantage. First impressions of Acer Aspire One 532h-2588: A highly adjustable angle provides good screen viewing. Keys are 93% the size of a full keyboard and quite comfortable. The Acer has 1 GB of RAM expandable to 2 GB ($48). And it lacks a DVD drive ($ 60-70). I expected I would need more memory and an external DVD drive. To test it, I loaded software to view, rename, and edit photos, plus a full compliment of word, spreadsheet, presentation, database, etc. software. Here's the list of software I installed by downloading from the internet and using my license keys to activate as necessary. The full Norton Security Suite Google Picasa photo viewing and editing software = FREEWARE Photoshop Elements 8 Nikon Capture NX2 photo editing software FileRenamer FREEWARE from Sherrod Computers Open Office Org word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, etc, = FREEWARE Based on ease of loading software from the internet and transferring files via USB port, I decided I do not need an external DVD drive. My first test was to determine if the included Windows software could display a photo in Nikon RAW/NEF format. Windows software could not handle the RAW file. I installed Google Picasa. It immediately recognized and displayed photos in Nikon's RAW file format. The next step was to edit a photo with Photoshop Elements 8. It worked fine and appeared to run almost as fast as my desktop which has 4 GB of RAM. Then I tried "Capture NX2", the phenomenal image editing software from Nikon. I was apprehensive this software would not work with 1 GB RAM. My suspicions were correct. Nikon's software needs a lot of RAM; it struggles to run on my desktop with 4 GB of RAM. I doubt this software would run on the Acer with 2 GB of RAM. This may be a moot point because the small screen on the Acer is not suitable for serious photo editing. The FileRenamer software loaded but gave an error message that all functions might not work in Windows7. But it works fine and does a great job of renaming photos. Based on these tests, I believe the Acer is excellent for reviewing photos to decide which to delete, renaming the remaining photos and placing them in file folders, and some minor photo editing. My last test involved the Open Office Org full suite of software. I opened a very large (42,000 KB) text file with multiple photos and complex page formatting. The Aspire One kept up with the page display as I scrolled thru the document and allows me to edit this huge file. It's not as fast as my desktop, but it works fine. I amazed this little computer with only 1 GB RAM can run all this software and handle such a large text file. Bottom Line = The Acer Aspire One 532h-2588 is an excellent travel computer for viewing, renaming, minor editing, and storing photos. The display screen is about half the size of an 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper. That's big enough to review photos, but too small for serious photo editing even though the computer runs Photoshop Elements 8. This size screen is reasonable for writing and editing a text document and connecting to the internet to view email. From a practical standpoint, I believe the only limitation of the Acer is the screen size. If you can accept that, I would highly recommend it. For easier transport, I bought a Targus bag with a mouse ($ 29). The small bag has lots of storage room, a handle and clip-on shoulder strap. The Acer meets my needs as a vacation travel computer. It's easy to carry and surprisingly powerful. Another issue is the risk of it being stolen. I would rather risk theft of a $ 300 netbook with minimal personal files than having my $ 1500 laptop stolen which has ALL my personal files. To protect the limited number of personal files on the Acer, I've password protected the Windows7 start-up screen and set separate passwords for each sensitive, personal file on the computer. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10-Inch Netbook (1.6 GHz Intel ATOM N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, 10 GB E-Storage, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) (Personal Computers) I received my ASUS EEE PC 1000HA on Friday, October 18, 2008. 1000HA is, in every nook and cranny, similarly designed like the 1000H. The only functionality differences are: Blue-Tooth and wireless "n" connectivity - which are not in 1000HA. Individuals have various needs for BT and the "n" connectivity. The difference in cost between 1000H and 1000HA is around $50. Remember everything else is the same on these two models. I have posted many pictures while unboxing the package. The pictures may help you make a better buying decision, just go to www.trashtalkforum . Many others, including myself, were going to buy the Acer Aspire One (Intel ATOM 1.6Ghz with 8.9" LCD screen, but I ma glad that I didn't. The screen on the 1000HA is just perfect for me - a girl with small hands and -2.25 vision on both eyes. 10" LCD works great for gaming, browsing, watching movies, and image editing. I will elaborate on gaming, movies and image editing, with sample pictures on my website. I'm not sure if html codes are allowed on this forum. When I first booted it up, I had to go through the XP initial user setup. After spending 8 minutes completing that, I was able to log into Windows. It does not come with FireFox, Safari or Opera. The only browser is IE 6. I updated to FireFox 3.X.X. My router is a LinkSys Wireless router. Right now the wifi adapter on the 1000HA says the network speed is 54Mpbs. Asus EEE PC uses a very good ethernet adapter made by Atheros. Regardless of the underclocked CPU (1.32 Ghz by ASUS), the 1000HA runs smoothly and so far has not crashed at all. I have run Counter Strike Condition Zero, Warcraft III Frozen Throne, and a few other free first person shooter games that are 2 to 3 years old. 160GB HDD is partitioned into two 80GB HDD. It initially slowed down a little bit and perhaps skipped some frames when I tried to run a large video file of HIGH RESOLUTION DIVX ON VLC PLAYER. After losing that little bit of FPS, it played just fine! Not to mention I was actually running 2 FireFox windows each with 3 tabs, Windows Live Messenger, File Explorer, all simultaneously. I am a heavy-user... It opens up Adobe Acrobat Reader just fine, with no lagging. It can handle image editing but I haven't tried that with Photoshop, I just used Photoscape - an free alternative lightweight program. Finally the battery efficiency is just amazing. Acer Aspire One 1.6Ghz Intel Atom/ASUS EEE 1000H/1000HA all run on 6-cell battery. What changed my mind about the Acer, besides the screen and keyboard size, was the battery's "mAh" - milliampere-hour, a measure of a battery's total capacity. Acer Aspire One 1.6 Ghz, if I remember correctly, has a 6-cell 2700 mAh battery. Asus EEE pc 1000H/1000HA has a 6-cell 6700 mAh battery. Electrochemically speaking, the higher the measurement is the better and longer-lasting the battery is (under proper care of course). A 2700 mAh rechargable battery is not considered inferior at all, but in this comparison against the Asus EEE PC 1000H/1000HA, it's being outshined. Asus EEE 1000H/1000HA model provides easy access to RAM upgrade. It can be easily upgraded to 2GB with a super simple installation. Acer Aspire One.....will make you work if you are not very "techie." I have seen an attempt by someone to upgrade to a 4GB ram but I don't know if it's any successful sincce I have forgotten the link to that forum which I visited 4 days ago. Hard drive can also be upgraded easily to whatever size you like, whether it's 320 GB or 650GB, as long as it's the right specs and size. There is onboard control for almost everything - sound, one-botton resolution readjustment, brightness, LCD-off (the system remains on), wifi-off, sleep mode etc. The multi-touch keypad is pretty cool too but won't be as responsive without a good individual customization. It works like an iPhone, with two fingers going diagonally on the pad you can choose to zoom in/out on the screen. With two fingers going veertically, you can scroll up and down the web browser or anything that has more than one page. Remember there are two SHIFT keys on your normal keyboard? Well the new keyboard, due to its reduced size, will take you a lot to get used to. The SHIFT key right below the enter-key is reduced to a squared finger-tip size key, and I frequently hit the the uparrow when I meant to hit the shift key on my righthand side. 1000HA has a SHINY REFLECTIVE-surfaced 1.3 mega pixel web cam. 3 USB ports, audio/mic jack, VGA out, speaks on the bottom, and a ethernet jack if you prefer wired network/internet. I will post pictures on my website at www.trashtalkforum so you can see what I'm talking about. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) (Personal Computers) I'm guessing I fell within a small percentage of buyers, and happened to have a bad luck streak with this netbook. All the reviews were very great, but my experience was not. First Netbook: The first netbook I ordered, upon opening, the entire keyboard panel (the panel that attaches to the base of the netbook) was dislocated from the base. Luckily it just snapped in place, so I dismissed it as a rather small deal. After using the netbook for a half hour or so, I realized that the left mouse clicker on the netbook had to be clicked really hard, or clicked in the very center of the button in order to work. I figured I had a defect, so I sent it in, hoping for a better replacement. Replacement: I was happy to see that the clicker for the left mouse function was working on this one. Also, the keyboard panel was properly attached to the base, so no "snapping" required. Everything seemed perfect with this model and I was happy. However... When I started browsing the internet, I noticed the 'H' key was rather sticky. Not just sticky but practically unusable. I thought maybe there was some manufacturers glue or some other compound that was causing the stickiness, so I gently lifted the 'H' key from the left side (it will come out and then 'click' back in place, but be careful when pulling it up), and used rubbing alcohol to clean the area. This moderately helped, but resumed the same behavior upon next use. Needless to say, I will be sending this one back as well, this time, for a refund! Conclusion: I believe if you are not un-lucky like I have been, you may end up with a neat little dual-core netbook that works flawlessly and has awesome battery life (at least 7-8 hrs on single charge). However, after my experience, I will stay away from this netbook (and, perhaps Asus), as it doesn't seem to have enough attention towards the build quality / process, and that is an important factor for me. If I'm paying ~$400 for a netbook, I want it to last for a while, and I'm glad I got out while I did, because I could only see more problems arise in the future. For now, I'll stick with HP, as their build quality always amazes me. Worth the extra $50 - $100. So maybe they will get these two netbooks back, have Asus do the work correctly this time on them, and then sell them as refurbs to a happy buyer. Good luck! . » original news

ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD-EU17-WT 10.1-Inch Netbook (White) (Personal Computers) Okay, so I have only had this computer for like a week so not a whole lot I can say right now. I got it out of the package (which arrived within three days of ordering) and yes it is small, but cute. VERY light, like the size of a Stephen King novel and very portable too. Anyways, setup was simple, took about 10 minutes for the OS to install and boot for the first time. It found my WiFi immediately and I just had to enter the password to connect. Very easy to install programs, but I only installed Firefox and Advanced System Care at this point. Comes with Word but it is the starter edition, which is basic functionality of word. I freelance write so the basic Word is good for me. It seems to work like a charm, the webcam is nice and pretty good quality for a .3 MP. Took a couple pictures and they came out looking pretty good. The battery life is pretty good I am ranging about 3 hours to 3 1/2 hours, which is better than the 20 minutes I was getting on my previous but still useable computer. Screen size is just right for me since I am just using this computer for writing and emails and such. I have my bigger laptop for movies and other videos. I am keeping this one relatively clean and not installing much at this point. Really nice overall, I can't complain too much except the background can't change on Starter OS. I choose to use Starter then maybe I will upgrade later on but really no need right now. I can live with the blue screen as the background. Typing is really easy, especially if you are used to smaller and more compact keyboards. Not a big fan of the touch pad so I hooked up my mouse. Plugged it in and it recognized it right away. Definitely a must-buy for anyone looking for something small and portable but with good programs. Also the sound is actually better than the Toshiba Satellite that my BF has which is kinda cool. Headphones are always better though for smaller laptops. Totally glad I bought this one and hope it will last me a long time. Been wanting an Asus for a few years now and it seems to be as great as advertised. Also, since it does not have a DVD/CD drive, I just imported files and programs from a flash drive onto this computer. Worked just as well and was pretty easy. So again, something I don't need at this point but if I need it then I will buy it later. . » original news

ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BU 10.1-Inch Netbook (Blue) (Personal Computers) I just got my 1015PEM on Friday. I created a USB install of Ubuntu and installed a 2GB DDR3 stick of RAM I had. I'm running the latest Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick 64 bit beta, and it's fantastic! Everything works buttery smooth and is working right off (for those of you also using Ubuntu/Linux, the wireless drivers use the Broadcom STA drivers, just install via ethernet connection at first) The keys and palmrests of smooth, not shiny, and extra comfortable to type on. I transitioned from a full-sized Mac keyboard to this little guy and had no problems adjusting. The speakers are LOUD at full volume, for such a little thing. Far outshine my Acer 3810t with 'Dolby Experience'. The power supply is superbly small. I've been able to watch hulu, etc, just fine. Last but not least, youtube 720p flash is a little jittery, but some updates in the future may fix this (this is after all, linux. Flash runs MUCH faster in Windows). Given that, there's really no need for 720p as the screen's resolution maxes out at 1024 by 600, so 480p looks (and works) just fine. Finally, the battery life is outstanding :) No regrets! . » original news

Samsung N150 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black Matte) (Personal Computers) Just ordered second Samsung Netbook N150. Pleased with #1 which was a Mother's Day present for my wife who is very happy with it with exception of small keyboard which works fine for email and web surfing, but not so comfortable for wordprocessing. Ordered #2 for our daughter whose laptop is outdated and needs to be replaced. Must be careful when starting out upon receiving it because I inadvertantly must have selected the "French" language for the unit and could not change that at home. I had to ship it via UPS (they pay) to a factory out of state to have it cleared for use. Samsung N150 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black Matte) (Personal Computers) Lets face it, it's a netbook,It's great for web surfing, checking e-mails and writing Amazon reviews. If you are looking for a laptop... go buy a laptop. It's not perfect but for less than $300 it's hard to beat.. » original news
